Self-Packing Tips From Our Professionals
General Tips
- Make sure cartons are strong, and clean and fit the item to be packed.
- Don’t pack containers with more than
50 pounds.
- Make unpacking easier. Label each box with the room name on the side, not on the top.
- Place heavier items on the bottom - light ones on top.
- Pack containers tightly to avoid shifting -
but don’t overload.
- Seal boxes shut tightly with tape. Tape tops, bottoms and box edges.
- Keep on hand permanent markers, tape and a utility knife.
Special Care Items
- Pack fragile items with extra care in specialized boxes.
- Lamps - remove light bulbs before packing. Pack lampshades separately in towels.
- Electronics - pack in original containers if possible. Label wiring with tape for easy installation. Check owners manual for any special preparation.
- Computers - backup software and important files before you move. Unhook all power cords. Insert an old disk in the drives.
- Printers and fax machines - remove toners/cartridges before shipping.
- Drain fluids from power and yard tools.
Everyday Items
- Clothes - use wardrobe boxes where possible. These make unpacking easier at your new home.
- Bundle flatware in groups of three and wrap the bundle.
- Double wrap glasses with paper. Put paper padding between packed glasses, too.
- Pack dishes on edge, never flat, after wrapping in paper.
